Project Description: Concerned Women for Family Development (CWFD) has been implementing “promoting Environmental Health for the Urban Poor” (PEHUP) project in Dhaka South City Corporation to contribute to the national goal and MDG related to environmental health and improve human well-being and dignity of the urban poor through ensuring access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation and adoption of desired hygiene practices.

Project location: We are working in 31 slums of DSCC zone 02, 03 and 05. The respected slums are situated in the Ward 01, 03, 04, 07, 08, 11, 22, 33, 40, 41, 48, 49, 51, 53 and 54. Dhaka WASA is one of the key stakeholders for legal and safe water supply in this project. Our specific WASA working Zones are as follows- 01, 02, 06 and 07.
The specific objectives of this project are:

The poor and marginalized populations in three urban cities are organized to participate with confidence in the planning and management of hygiene promotion, safe drinking water supply and environmental sanitation facilities.

The poor and marginalized populations living in slums and low income communities in three urban cities have established their access to safe and adequate water and improved sanitation facilities

The low-income groups and marginalized population living in three city slums and other informal settlements adopted improved hygiene practices (hand washing in critical times) while community hygiene situation as a whole improved.

Urban WASH actors including national government (line ministries), LGIs and service agencies are influenced towards policy change and practice in meeting WASH rights of urban poor.
The major area of interventions of this project is capacity development, safe drinking water supply, environmental sanitation, hygiene promotion/ BCC, advocacy and networking. “Community toilet” is one of the key elements of this project to ensure the environmental sanitation.
